Mixed messages in Egypt

Egypt’s new president, Mohammed Morsi, must waste no time establishing a strong leadership position that puts the law—secular law—first in the public’s mind as his country’s democratic transition proceeds. If Morsi doesn’t act quickly and firmly, Egypt risks sliding into Islamist turmoil and inviting the military to restore dictatorial rule.
