New Romney ad hits Obama on the economy

— Presumptive presidential nominee Mitt Romney has released a Web video hammering President Barack Obama for his assertion Friday that “the economy is doing fine.”

The Romney campaign has paid for the 54-second spot, which opens with the president at a White House press conference.

The ad shows eight people talking about their experiences: staff cuts, job loss, personal bankruptcy, a two-year job hunt, no healthcare and a slashed pension and other concerns. The ad closes with, “No, Mr. President, we are not doing fine.”

Romney is using Obama’s remark to cast the president as out of touch with the average American, a criticism the president’s campaign has tried against Romney.

The economy with its stubborn 8.2 percent unemployment is the biggest issue for voters and a weak spot for Obama.

REASON ARKANSAS Reason says...

Nothing like ADG's fair and balanced... oops....
.
The Romney ad claims that as governor, “Romney had the best jobs record in a decade.” Yes — Massachusetts added more net jobs during Romney’s four years in office than during the four-year period of either his predecessor or successor. But — that ignores the national recessions before and after Romney’s time in office. If you look at how Massachusetts stacked up on job creation compared with other states, Romney actually fared worse than his predecessor and successor.
.
The ad claims Romney “reduced unemployment to just 4.7 percent.” Yes — Massachusetts’ unemployment rate went from 5.6 percent to 4.6 percent under Romney. But — the state’s unemployment rate was slightly lower than the national rate when he took office, and was roughly the same as the national rate when he left office.
.
The ad claims Romney “balanced every budget without raising taxes.” Yes — Romney never raised personal income taxes. But — in order to balance the budget, Romney increased government fees by hundreds of millions of dollars.

"We’ve created 4.3 million jobs over the past 27 months. The private sector is doing fine. Where we’re seeing problems is with state and local government, often with cuts initiated by governors or mayors who are not getting the kind of help they’re accustomed to from the federal government."
.
The president was talking about jobs and the current problem IS with public sector jobs and this is due to Republican governors and local officials flexing their European austerity muscles.. It matters not to them to lay off teachers, firemen, and police officers.. It swells the ranks of the unemployed and makes the president look bad..
.
They complain about loss of revenue as they give tax breaks and loopholes to the wealthy "job creators".. So where are the jobs..??? In the meantime, these laid-off public workers quit making purchases they would normally make - less sales tax, property taxes, state fees, etc. which further constrains state budgets leading to more layoffs.. BUT it makes the president look bad - which IS the Republican plan..
.
This would be Romney's policy.. Smaller government, smaller budgets, more tax breaks for the wealthy, keep wages low, keep people under the heel of corporate power as they take total control of our government and the economy.. That's the Republican master plan..
.
The problem now IS the public sector but watch what it will MEAN for the private sector..!!!

Public sector workers received their money from tax revenue. Did not the private sector wage earners have to first earn the money and pay their taxes for public-sector workers to receive their salaries, benefits and the money with which to pay their taxes and to make purchases. Why should public sector workers have job security when the private sector doesn't?

Buffett and most economists agree that public spending boosts the economy when the private sector spending is down. Aimee seems to think that the government should just run everything. We know from the experience with the Soviet Union that government indeed should not run everything and that the economy does better in a capitalist system. The rightwingers seem to want pur capitalism with little government interference. Then there are those of us who believe that a middle ground of capitalism buffered with reasonable government regulations and that government expenditures can be beneficial and necessary to benefit the economy. While President Obama is to the left of me, he really occupies this middle ground. Most of his economic decisions have been prudent, and we are better off today than when he took office. Obama also has slowed the growth of government and started backing us out of the ridiculous amount of military spending while still protecting our interests through drones and espionage. Romney seeks to lift environmental restrictions and financial regulations, cut education and social programs for the middle class and poor, while keeping low taxes on the superwealthy. Romney as President will just divide this country further.

If federal government spending were so great, then Greece would be a superpower.

A balanced budget rule would be more prudent and a compromise between socialism and austerity. "Socialism" is not a bad word in Europe - I was recently there and the political ads for the left advocated voting for "socialism" as opposed to "austerity".

.
talkingpointsmemo. com/archives/2012/06/obama_and_private_sector_jobs.php?ref=fpblg
.
After the Meltdown there was a sudden drop in private sector jobs but public sector remained pretty much the same... Then, after the 2010 election and onece we get past the 2010 Census "spike" public sector jobs begin falling as the private sector continues to rise...
.
Now, according to YOU we need to get rid of these public sector jobs so it will be more in line with the private sector... Never mind that these people are contributing to the economy, they are buying groceries, going to movies, getting their hair done, buying refrigerators... Never mind ---THEY work for the "evil" government, so of course let's fire them from their jobs so they can join the misery of the private sector...
.
NOW, with THEM unemployed too, we have even less people to buy groceries, go to movies, gett their hair done, or buy refrigerators, SOOOooooo we will have a new round of firing people who....wait for it......."work in grocery stores", "work in movie theatres", "work in beauty salons", "make or sell refrigerators"... NOW, aren't you HAPPPY..??????
You've managed to PULL EVEN MORE PEOPLE DOWN to your level...!!!

Here's a headline from Investors Business Daily: "Private Jobs Down 4.6 Million From January 2008; Federal Jobs Up 11.4%"

"Private-sector jobs are still down by 4.6 million, or 4%, from January 2008, when overall employment peaked. Meanwhile government jobs are down just 407,000, or 1.8%. Federal employment actually is 225,000 jobs above its January 2008 level, an 11.4% increase. That’s right, up 11.4%."

This is public knowledge - that's why BO had to backtrack on his lyin' a$$ comments.
Again, if continually increasing federal spending were the answer, Greece would be a superpower. Greece is in the toilet and that's where we are headed.

Tortitude,

Greece's problems have more to do with a workforce which does not want to work much, and widespread tax fraud and corruption among the rich. They need to crack down on both in the manner in which Jerry Brown is taxing the rich and cutting spending in California. If the far right and the far left in this country would be reasonable, the deficit would not be a problem. You could raise tax rates on the multimillionaires slightly and nip and tuck at spending in a fashion which does not send us into a deeper recession. This is pretty much what Obama has been trying to accomplish, but the Republicans have not been cooperative in trying to compromise.

Lots of political psychology being pumped unto the American people. But the American people did not cause the financial crisis! The American people are the victims! Wall Street destroyed the economy and the victims bailed them out! Wall Street is doing just fine! But the American family's net worth dropped by nearly 40% from $126,400 to $77,300. The American median family's income was already edging down but continued to decline from $49,600 to $45,800. Corporate America (multinationals) repaid its victims by raising retail prices and tossing about 9 million jobs overseas. And not only did it sink the American family but also the country's revenue which added to the debt. The corporate tax breaks added to the debt. But if you listen to all the political media rhetoric... It is the people to blame! It is the teachers, the fire fighter, the policemen and any worker that will not take a forced bargain wage...
Which is no more than reverse psychology and if you let them... They will come back and do it again! And once again it will be on the backs of the American people. Oh, did I mention that Wall Street and these multinationals are doing just fine? "It's the economy, stupid."
