Windstream makes push in data business

Little Rock-based Windstream Corp. is preparing to hold its annual meeting at a time the company is focusing its growth on cloud computing and other business services.

Windstream shareholders are to gather Wednesday at the Capitol Hotel in downtown Little Rock.

The company was spun off from the former Alltel Corp. in 2006 as a traditional landline phone company focused on rural markets. Since then Windstream has remade itself into a broadband and business services provider, though it is still working to expand its phone, Internet and satellite TV packages in non-urban markets.

Windstream recently opened a new data center in Little Rock and is adding two more elsewhere. The company says its data services coupled with its phone line network gives it a unique place in the market.
