Home invasion suspect dies day after being shot by resident

Police in Russellville say an apparent home invasion Wednesday ended with the resident shooting the assailant, causing injuries that proved fatal.

Russellville police were called shortly after 4 p.m. to the shooting in a home in the 1300 block of North Cleveland Avenue.

The injured patient was taken by helicopter to Baptist Hospital in Little Rock, where he was originally listed in critical condition. Russellville Police Department Officer Drew Latch said the man died at the hospital late Thursday morning.

Investigators determined the man was armed with a firearm when he entered the home while the resident was there, Latch said in a statement. The resident then shot the armed assailant.

Police didn't release the names of resident or the man who was shot.

Latch said the investigation is ongoing and he couldn't speculate on what the man's precise motive for being in the residence was.

"At this time we have nothing leading to the fact that he should have been in the house," Latch said.

Latch said the case would ultimately be forwarded to the prosecutor's office for review of possible charges, adding it's too early to say definitively if the resident acted correctly in opening fire.

"We need to get all the facts in and everything," Latch said.
