Officers went to the Park Heights apartments at 1701 N. Bryant St. about 7:29 p.m. after getting word that there was a gunshot victim in the bushes.

When they arrived, they found Bernard Sherrod, 20, of 2706 Longcoy St. lying outside one of the complex’s buildings with a gunshot wound in the right shoulder area.

Sherrod was taken to UAMS Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

By Tuesday morning, detectives said they had identified Sherrod’s shooter as 21-year-old Darrell Freeman Jr ., whose last known residence was at 4224 Cobb St. in Little Rock. Freeman turned himself in to police about 8:30 p.m. and faces a first-degree murder charge, according to police spokesman Lt. Sidney Allen.

Allen said he didn’t know what led detectives to Freeman, adding that Monday’s shooting was not related to the spate of shootings and other killings in the past week.

Allen said the shooting was not random and that the two had a history, though he did not know the details of it.

Allen said the shooting wasn’t a robbery, nor was it drug related.

Sherrod’s death marks the 18th homicide in Little Rock this year. At this point in 2013, there were seven reported killings in the city.
