MovieStyle: Dog days

Late August is the low trough of summer and traditionally a time when Hollywood studios release movies that, for whatever reason, they feel a little weird about. And so this week we get the oddly risible If I Stay, an apparently seriously meant film about the before and aftermath of catastrophic car crash and its effect on the dating life of former Hit-Girl Chloe Grace Moretz. Karen Martin explains in this week’s MovieStyle.

Also opening is the rah-rah sports film When the Game Stands Tall, Paul Haggis’ flawed but interesting Third Person (both of which MovieStyle editor Philip Martin reviews) and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, which screened too late for us to get a review in the newspaper. (But look for Piers Marchant’s take on the film on blooddirtangels.com.) And, as usual, we have Karen Martin’s take on recent DVD releases.
