Camden man arrested in fatal shooting of SAU player, former student

Police have arrested a second suspect in the fatal shooting Sunday of a Southern Arkansas University football player and a former student.

Timothy Johnson, 23, of Camden was charged Thursday with a terroristic act, the Columbia County sheriff's office said in a statement. He's the second person to be charged in the shooting. Byron Dunn, 20, of Magnolia was arrested late Monday.

SAU wide receiver Brandon Hobdy, 23, of Garland, Texas, and former student Wayne Payton, 24, of McNeil were killed early Sunday outside of a back-to-school party at a Veterans of Foreign Wars building near Magnolia, the Banner-News reported Tuesday.

Police were called around 1:13 a.m. about a fight at the "VFW Hut," and gunfire was reported while officers were en route, according to the article. Hobdy and Payton were transported to Magnolia Regional Medical Center, where they later died from their injuries.

Both Dunn and Johnson are being held in lieu of $1 million bonds. Dunn made his first appearance Tuesday morning before Judge Hamilton Singleton, while Johnson is awaiting his first court appearance, authorities said.

The investigation is ongoing.
