3 McGehee students injured in cutting

Three McGehee High School students were taken to a hospital for medical treatment after a Friday morning altercation with a knife, district officials and police say.

Officers received a call at 9:45 a.m. after three or four male students fought in a high school lobby bathroom after a verbal altercation turned physica, McGehee Police Department Chief Jim White said in a news release.

Earlier Friday, District Superintendent Thomas Gathen said two students at the high school were injured by another student who had the knife during the fight.

"I've been assured none of the injuries are life-threatening, but it did require [the students] to go to the hospital," Gathen said.

All three students were transported by ambulance to area hospitals, White said. One went to Chicot Memorial Hospital in Lake Village and two were transported to the McGehee Hospital.

Charges will be filed through the juvenile system, White said.

The high school was locked down for about 30 minutes afterward to allow law enforcement to investigate, Gathen said.

The police department will issue another statement about the fight 10 a.m. Monday, the release states.
