Liquid in found bottle burns toddler

Benton police are investigating how a child was burned by a substance that is yet to be identified while playing at Tyndall Park on Wednesday.

According to police, officers responded to Saline Memorial Hospital at 9:49 p.m. Wednesday where they met with one of the 17-month-old victim's parents, who said the child had been burned by a substance while playing at Tyndall Park around 7 p.m.

The parent said the child picked up a bottle containing a red liquid near the corner of Border and Hoover streets, and some of the liquid spilled onto the child's arm, police reported. Approximately an hour and a half later, the arm blistered, so the child was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Officers located the clear plastic bottle containing a small amount of red liquid at the park, police said. The bottle was tested at the hospital, and it was determined the liquid was an acid of some type.

Nothing suggests this was done intentionally, police reported, and it is still under investigation.
