Spring training report

ROYALS-MARINERS

Hernandez' 2-hitter

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Felix Hernandez pitched two-hit ball for six innings in his longest outing of the spring Thursday as a split squad of Seattle Mariners lost to the Kansas City Royals 3-0.

Hernandez, the ace who led the AL with a 2.14 ERA last season, gave up one run. He struck out four and walked none.

Hernandez retired the side in order in four of his six innings. A leadoff double by Christian Colon followed by a wild pitch and Jarrod Dyson's sacrifice fly in the third produced the Royals' run against Hernandez.

Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie shut out the Mariners on two hits for 5 2/3 innings. Closer Greg Holland relived and finished the sixth with a strikeout.

Ryan Jackson hit a two-run single with two outs in the eighth off reliever Danny Farquhar, who is in contention for a Seattle bullpen job.

MARLINS-CARDINALS

Wainwright struggles

JUPITER, Fla. -- St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright gave up four runs, including a solo home run by Giancarlo Stanton, in 3 2/3 innings before a rain delay ended his outing in a 5-3 loss to the Miami Marlins.

Wainwright gave up six hits in his second spring start and struggled with his fastball.

After rain held up play for 55 minutes, Wainwright went to the indoor batting cages for more work. Pitching coach Derek Lilliquist noticed a flaw in Wainwright's mechanics and the correction produced positive results.

Jason Heyward hit his first home run with St. Louis.

Marlins starter Henderson Alvarez allowed two runs and four hits in three innings.

RAYS-YANKEES

Warren solid

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Adam Warren gave another solid performance in his bid to earn a spot in the New York Yankees pitching rotation.

The right-hander, trying to make the transition from a reliever to a starter, allowed one run and four hits over 3 2/3 innings during a 6-5 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Warren struck out five and walked one, allowing a leadoff home run in the second to Evan Longoria.

Warren worked out of the bullpen in 2014 after failing to win a spot in the rotation during spring training. He went 3-6 with a 2.97 ERA in 69 relief appearances.

Brandon Guyer and Asdrubal Cabrera drove in runs for Tampa Bay, and Desmond Jennings hit a solo home run off Chris Martin.

Milwaukee offense hot

PHOENIX -- Khris Davis and Luis Jimenez hit grand slams and the Milwaukee Brewers had another big offensive day in a 15-1 victory over a Seattle Mariners split-squad.

Scooter Gennett and Jonathan Lucroy each had three of Milwaukee's 22 hits and Matt Clark, Jean Segura and Logan Shafer had two each. The Brewers have outscored opponents 83-35 over the last 10 games, going 7-2-1 in that stretch.

Mike Fiers, coming back from a minor shoulder issue made his start in two weeks and allow three hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Seattle starter Roenis Elias allowed eight hits and six earned runs in three-plus innings and didn't retire a batter until Milwaukee led 4-0. Jesus Sucre brought home Willie Bloomquist with an RBI single in the third inning -- one of four Mariners hits.

PADRES-DIAMONDBACKS

Arizona took a 1-0 lead in the second on A.J. Pollock's RBI single. San Diego tied it in the third on Jeff Kemp's RBI grounder.

Pollock had an RBI single in the sixth against Padres reliever Kevin Quackenbush for a 2-1 lead.

The Diamondbacks added a run in the seventh before Wallace tied the game 3-3 with a two-run home run to center off right-hander Allen Webster.

BRAVES-PIRATES

Pirates toppled

BRADENTON, Fla. -- Josh Harrison led off the game with a home run that ended Wandy Rodriguez's scoreless streak at 12 innings, and the Atlanta Braves beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-5.

Chris Johnson had three hits, including a two-run home run that capped a five-run first inning against Vance Worley, a drive just fair down the left-field line.

After the Pirates tied the score, Jonny Gomes hit a go-ahead home run in the ninth against Clayton Richard and Jesus Flores had a run-scoring infield single.

Rodriguez allowed four runs and eight hits in five innings. Worley retired 13 in a row after Johnson's home run and wound up giving up seven hits in six innings

TIGERS-ORIOLES

Big bats lift Tigers

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and Yoenis Cespedes each homered for the Detroit Tigers in 6-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

Cabrera connected off Tommy Hunter in the sixth and Martinez homered off Kevin Gausman in the eighth, the first home runs for the stars who have spent much of the spring rehabilitating from offseason surgery. Both played their first spring games last weekend.

Martinez and Cabrera combined for 57 home runs last season and Cespedes, who went deep in the seventh against Hunter, had 22 for Oakland and Boston.

Cabrera also singled in a run and had three RBI.

David Price started for the Tigers and allowed 3 runs, striking out 7, in 6 2/3 innings, his longest outing of the spring.

Chris Tillman started for the Orioles and went 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs. Jayson Nix homered for the Orioles.

RED SOX-TWINS

Ortiz goes 0 for 3

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- David Ortiz was 0 for 3 in his return to Boston's lineup after a nine-day absence, and the Red Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 5-4.

Bothered by a cold and dehydration, Ortiz had not played since March 16. Ortiz struck out, grounded into a forceout and popped out against Tommy Milone, dropping his average to .222 (4 for 18).

Mike Napoli was 1 for 3 in his first big league game since March 18. He had been sidelined by a sore right ankle.

Rusney Castillo hit a 10th-inning home run off Jake Reed. Castillo, who signed a $72.5 million, seven-year contract, has two home runs in spring training.

Mookie Betts hit his seventh double, walked and scored a run.

BLUE JAYS-PHILLIES

Hamels pitches well

DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Cole Hamels allowed two hits in five scoreless innings during the Philadelphia Phillies' 4-1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

A focus of trade speculation, Hamels didn't allow a hit until Kevin Pillar reached on an infield single leading off the fifth. Hamels picked off Pillar, Dalton Pompey tripled to left-center field and Hamels struck out Jose Reyes.

Hamels, a four-time All-Star, struck out four and walked three.

Steve Tolleson hit a grand slam off Ken Giles in the eighth.

Blue Jays starter Aaron Sanchez gave up one run, two hits and one walk in 5 1/3 innings.

Edwin Encarnacion returned to Toronto's lineup at designated hitter after missing 16 games with back inflammation. He walked twice and reached on a fielder's choice.

DODGERS-WHITE SOX

Kershaw OK after hit

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Clayton Kershaw struck out eight in six innings, and Yasiel Puig and Jimmy Rollins homered to help the Los Angeles Dodgers defeat the Chicago White Sox 9-6.

Kershaw showed no ill effects from his previous outing against Oakland last Friday, when he was hit in the jaw by a line drive and chipped a tooth. He gave up four hits and a run, walking one and recording at least one strikeout in every inning he worked.

The reigning NL MVP and Cy Young Award winner also had a single and two sacrifice bunts. He scored on Rollins' two-run home run in the sixth against Daniel Webb.

Rollins also drove in a run with a groundout and hit an RBI double off White Sox starter Brad Penny.
