Benton hostage call results in 2 arrests

Benton police arrested two people on drug charges early Monday after responding to a call about a hostage at a hotel.

Officers were called about 3:48 a.m. to Days Inn at 17701 Interstate 30. Witnesses said Paul Barnes, 33, had shown them a gun and refused to let their friend, Haley Yates, 22, of Benton, leave a hotel room, the department said in a news release.

Yates was outside when officers arrived, the department reported. Police spoke to her and Barnes, then searched the room. Officers reported finding a handgun, methamphetamine, cocaine, Ecstasy, marijuana and drug paraphernalia that included plastic bags and scales.

Barnes and Yates were arrested. Both were charged with simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms, possession of drug paraphernalia and multiple counts of possession of a controlled substances with purpose to deliver.

Barnes was additionally charged with false imprisonment.

He and Yates were being held in the Saline County jail Tuesday.
