Render unto Caesar

A guide for the perplexed

Just when Mike Huckabee was making Arkansas proud as a presidential candidate, reminding folks of his good will when he offered Katrina's refugees safe haven in our state, and when he threw open the gates of Central High to the Little Rock Nine at long last, he goes off and starts sounding like . . . Orval Faubus.

What a shame. Now he's told Kim Davis, the county clerk in Kentucky who refuses to issue homosexual couples wedding licenses despite a federal court order, that she's doing the right thing by defying the law of the land. Shades of the bad old days in Arkansas.

Happily, there's a simple solution to any problem of conscience Kim Davis may have in obeying the law: Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's. If she cannot carry out her lawful duty as county clerk, then resign that secular office and serve her Lord as a private citizen. Problem solved. Instead of aggravated.

Instead, Mike Huckabee says he supports Kim Davis' defiance of the law. It's not just Kim Davis who disappoints in this instance, but Mike Huckabee, too. Deeply.
