Zachary Atwood was arrested June 2 on a manslaughter charge related to the death of infant Mitchell Goss, but Prosecuting Attorney Cody Hiland amended the charge to first-degree murder after the county coroner said in June that the infant suffered blunt-force trauma to the head after Atwood sat on the child.

Sunnie Atwood, the infant's mother, told authorities that the couple last saw Mitchell alive about 10 a.m. May 31. At approximately 11:20 a.m., a call was placed to 911 about the infant not breathing and being unresponsive, according to court documents.

Zachary Atwood admitted to sitting on the infant "as he was lying on a sofa in the living room of the residence," according to the news release from the coroner's office. "Atwood also confessed that he placed the infant back in the infant's bed after the injury occurred and did not report the injury or seek medical aid for the infant."
