Pulaski County received the lion's share of the total with 954 pounds -- the largest amount since the sheriff's office began participating in the program in 2010, according to a news release.

North Little Rock police reported 305 pounds, followed by Little Rock police with 148 pounds. Both departments took in substantially larger amounts when they conducted the program last summer.

"All collected items were destroyed in a safe and environmentally friendly manner," the news release read. "Removing these old/expired Rx drugs helps prevent abuse and overdose by both children and adults."

The program is also intended to discourage people from flushing unwanted drugs to prevent contaminating municipal water supplies and landfills.

Shooting leaves 1 hurt; no suspects

Pulaski County deputies were investigating a shooting Saturday night during which a man was shot in the buttocks.

The man was transported to UAMS Medical Center with injuries that weren't life-threatening, according to Lt. Chris Ameling. Police did not immediately identify the victim.

No arrests had been made Saturday night, and no suspects had been identified.

The shooting occurred near the intersection of Arkansas 365 and 145th Street in a neighborhood south of Little Rock.

Investigators are working several leads, Ameling said.
