Arkansas man gets life sentence in fatal shooting in convenience store lot

TEXARKANA — A Texarkana man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing a 22-year-old man in a convenience store parking lot last fall.

The Texarkana Gazette reported that 49-year-old Marvin Arrell Stanton was convicted of fatally shooting Jesse James Hamilton in the stomach at a convenience store after an alleged argument over a parking spot Sept. 25 around 10 p.m. Hamilton died at a hospital four hours later.

Stanton testified that Hamilton and his friend were "talking trash." Stanton said a fist fight between him and Hamilton left him feeling like his life was in danger.

Stanton was sentenced to life for murder and an additional 15 years for the use of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The sentences will run consecutively.
