Helpful Hints

DEAR HELOISE: When we fly and use the long- or short-term parking lots, we always take our vehicle registration and insurance documents with us.

A friend of ours once parked his car at a large amusement park, and the car was stolen. The thieves drove to his home, opened the garage door with the opener and had their way with the house without any neighbors knowing anything was wrong.

DEAR READER: Tasha, this is pretty darn crazy! However, it's possible, and more frightening if the vehicle is in an airport long-term parking location -- a good guess the owner will be gone for some time. While on this subject, if you are going to be gone for more than a day or so, fix the garage door so it cannot be opened with an opener. Many have an "off" button on the wall assembly. Stay safe!

DEAR HELOISE: I recently found another use for those plastic sleeves that our newspaper comes in. I just moved after living in the Houston area for more than 40 years -- I had a lot to move.

Whenever I took apart a piece of furniture, I'd put the nuts and bolts in the sleeve. When finished, I would tie a knot on the sleeve. I moved on to the next piece of furniture, and the objects from that piece were placed in the bag, and another knot was tied above them.

Each "pouch" was labeled so I could put my furniture back together once settled. All of the pouches were put in one container to keep them together.

DEAR READER: Welcome to San Antonio. Enjoy some breakfast tacos and our "subtropical" weather.

DEAR READERS: Want to protect your nonstick pots and pans from getting scratched during storage? Place a paper towel, paper plate or a worn-out washcloth between the pans to protect them.

DEAR HELOISE: My truck made this "knock" noise only in the morning. It would do it more during warm months. I recorded the sound on my smartphone so my repairman could hear what it sounded like. When my mechanic heard the sound, he was able to determine the problem and fix it.
