A Russellville man is being held on a charge of first-degree murder after a woman died of injuries sustained in a shooting Thursday, according to police.

In a statement Friday afternoon, the Russellville Police Department said Jeffery Ross, 48, had been transported to the Pope County jail on the murder charge as well as one count of possession of firearms by a certain person.

He initially was being held on a charge of first-degree battery after the woman, whose identity has not been released, was found critically hurt around 3:15 p.m. Thursday in the 800 block of West 3rd Place.

She was then taken to Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Russellville for gunshot wounds, where she was later pronounced dead, police said shortly after noon Friday.

Ross remained at the Pope County jail as of 4 p.m., records show. He has a court appearance set for Oct. 31.
