Area athletes win at Kansas Relays

Rogers High high jumper Jake Benninghoff and Bentonville High's team of Sophie Quandt, Baylee Barganier, Trinity Walker, Lainey Quandt recorded victories Friday during the Kansas Relays in Lawrence, Kan.

Benninghoff matched his season-high when he cleared 6 feet, 8 inches on his first attempt and edged out Shawnee Heights (Kan.) junior Michael Hoffer, who cleared 6-8 on his third try. Benninghoff then tried to clear 7 feet but missed all three attempts.

The Lady Tigers team claimed their win in the distance medley relay, where the four girls turned in a time of 12 minutes, 27.31 seconds. Lainey Quandt ran a season-best 5:09.26 over 1,600 meters to help Bentonville edge past Lee's Summit (Mo.) West, whose final time was 12:27.35. Rogers' team of Halle Gilreath, Grace Risenhoover, Emily Efurd, Anna Jeffcoat finished seventh in 12:57.68.

Bentonville's Adrain Broadus took third in the triple jump at 43-1, while Bentonville (21:50.56) and Rogers (22:02.12) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the girls 4x1,600 relay. In the boys 4x1,600 relay, Rogers took fourth at 18:38.34 while Bentonville was seventh at 18:51.98.

Friday's Games

Olathe (Kan.) Northwest 7, Rogers High 0

The Mounties had their five-game winning streak halted on Friday at the River City Festival in Lawrence, Kan.

Rogers (11-11) managed just singles by Jeb Brain and Grayson Mauldin in the shutout loss. Jeb Sample took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits over three innings. He struck out three and walked two.

Farmington 6, Alma 0

Tyler Gregg pitched a two-hitter and struck out 13 to lead the Cardinals to a shutout win.

Gregg went all seven innings to earn the complete-game win.

The Cardinals (17-8) gave their right-hander all the run support he needed in the bottom of the first innings, but added to the lead with a three-run fifth inning.

Ryan Larkin smacked two doubles to lead the Cardinals. Gregg was 2-for-4 with a double, and Kelton Price was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Eric Morales was 2-for-2 with a double.

Farmington will return to action at home Tuesday against Russellville.

Thursday's Games

Rogers High 2, Lawrence, Kan. 1

Pinch-runner Jeb Brain scored on a passed ball in the top of the ninth inning to help the Mounties edge the host team in the River City Festival in Lawrence, Kan.

Rogers (11-10) has now won five in a row a freshman Matthew Watson threw four innings of hitless relief to earn the win. He struck out six and did not walk a batter. Watson drew a walk leading off the top of the ninth and was replaced by Brain. Jeb Sample followed with a single to right field -- his third hit of the game. Brain went all the way to third on th play and scored on the passed ball.

Luke McFadden also added two hits, while McKaden Templeton drove in a run in the top of the first inning to give the Mounties a 1-0 lead. Mason Griffin pitched well for Rogers, allowing a run on three hits over five innings. He struck out five and walked three.
