Christmas movies on Hallmark and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries channels are a tradition for many. They usually start around Thanksgiving and continue rolling out through the end of the year. They're sappy, sweet and often romantic, a real feel-good treat for those who embrace them.

It's only July, but for Hallmark it's a special time. On July 7, Hallmark Movies & Mysteries began showing a variety of movies during its Gold Crown Christmas event. It ends with the premiere of a new movie, Home for Christmas Day, at 8 p.m. today.

The movie stars Catherine Bell as Jane Mckendrick, a widowed mother determined to protect her teenage daughter Betsy (Matreya Fedor) from the harsh realities of life. Just before Christmas, Betsy falls in love with an enlisted man who will soon ship out. Having lost her husband, who was killed while on active duty, Jane tries to persuade Betsy to abandon the romance. Eventually, Jane and her daughter learn important lessons of the heart and discover that taking chances can sometimes lead to the most extraordinary happy endings.
