Wal-Mart event to screen for diabetes

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is partnering with the American Diabetes Association for its next wellness day event, which will be held June 17 in the retailer's 4,700 U.S. stores.

Free health screenings in Wal-Mart stores will include blood glucose, blood pressure and body mass index tests. The American Diabetes Association will then follow up via email with customers whose tests indicated a greater risk of diabetes, providing individuals with suggested next steps and resources.

The company said the partnership extends an event that has provided nearly 1.1 million free health screenings since the program began in October 2015.

"We want to make sure each and every Wal-Mart customer whose screening has uncovered any type of risk factors that we'll be giving them this additional support via the [American Diabetes Association] to help them navigate getting solutions to these potential health events and getting access to the right type of care," said George Riedl, a senior vice president and president of Wal-Mart's health and wellness business.
