Anime films to roll in state; Johnny Mathis in Memphis

Three Arkansas movie theaters -- the UA Breckenridge 12 in Little Rock, the AMC Classic Fort Smith and the Malco Razorback Cinema in Fayetteville -- will screen director Hayao Miyazaki's animated film My Neighbor Totoro, from Japanese anime producer Studio Ghibli, dubbed into English, at 12:55 p.m. today and with English-language subtitles at 7 p.m. Monday.

It kicks off Studio Ghibli Fest 2017, a six-film, monthly series of anime masterpieces. The screening will also include Gkids Minifest, screenings of award-winning short animated films from around the world.

Mathis in Memphis

Monday Bluegrass

The Michael and Jennifer McLain Band -- husband and wife Michael (guitar, banjo and mandolin) and Jennifer McLain (vocals and instrumentals), Dan Kelly (fiddle) and Kori Caswell, bass -- will perform bluegrass and acoustic music at 7 p.m. Monday at the Collins Theatre, 120 W. Emerson St., Paragould, part of Jonesboro public radio station KASU-FM, 91.9's Bluegrass Monday concert series. The station will "pass the hat" to pay the group; suggested donation is $5 per person. Music & Medicine

Conversation, cocktails and music by the Funky Butt Brass Band and "culinary creations" by chef Matthew Bell are part of the inaugural Music & Medicine fundraiser, put on by a group of medical professionals, to benefit the nonprofit Oxford American magazine, 6 p.m. Thursday at South on Main, 1304 Main St., Little Rock. Macbeth at the Met

Soprano Anna Netrebko sings the role of Lady Macbeth in Giuseppe Verdi's opera Macbeth, from the Metropolitan Opera's 2014-2015 season, onscreen at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Breckenridge 12 in Little Rock, the Tinseltown in Benton and the Razorback Cinema in Fayetteville, part of the Met Live in HD summer encore series. Making art

July 21 is the deadline to enter the Arkansas Arts Council's 2018 Small Works on Paper exhibition, showcasing artwork no larger than 18-by-24 inches by members of the Arkansas Artist Registry, an online gallery featuring the work of Arkansas artists.

Juror James Phillips, a faculty member at Howard University in Washington, will select up to 40 pieces to tour 10 venues across the state, starting in January at the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center in Little Rock, and has up to $2,000 available for purchase awards, which become part of the permanent Small Works on Paper collection.

Artists may enter up to three works; fee is $10 per entry or $25 for three entries. Works must have been completed within the last two years. EACC season

Grammy- and Dove Award-winning Christian contemporary singer Steven Curtis Chapman will open the 2017-2018 performance season, 7:30 p.m. Sept. 16 at East Arkansas Community College, 1700 Newcastle Road, Forrest City.
