Williams library to mark 20 years

An outdoor celebration is planned for Thursday for the 20th anniversary of the Sue Cowan Williams Library.

The event will be from 5-7 p.m. at the library at 1800 Chester St.

There will be live entertainment by the Timmons Art Foundation, family activities, free refreshments and a panel discussion about the legacy of Williams.

Williams was a teacher at the all-black Paul Laurence Dunbar High School who filed a class-action lawsuit against the Little Rock School District challenging the rate of teacher salaries based on skin color in 1942. She lost that case initially but won on appeal in 1945.

Williams died in 1994. The library was dedicated in her honor in 1997.

Arts Center joins hands with school

The Arkansas Arts Center began a partnership with the Booker Arts Magnet School this weekend at the Young Arkansas Artists family festival and awards ceremony.

Through the partnership, students at the school can serve as junior docents for exhibitions and get behind-the-scenes tours of the center's collections, the Museum School, the Children's Theatre and exhibitions.

The school's choir and music students will perform at Arts Center events throughout the year.

The center also has partnerships with the Photography Department at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and other community organizations.

"Community partnerships are at the forefront of our organization," Executive Director Todd Herman said. "As we look forward to our building project, we are focusing on the Arts Center as a community gathering place -- Little Rock's cultural living room, and community partnerships like these will continue to be placed at the heart of what we do."

Summer bus pass $30 to LR pupils

Students enrolled in schools in the greater Little Rock area are eligible for a discounted $30 summer bus pass through Rock Region Metro.

The pass is good from June 1 through Aug. 31. Typically, monthly passes cost $19.50.

Students "gain freedom through use of the public transit system to get to jobs, summer enrichment opportunities and social activities," Metro Executive Director Jarod Varner said.

The $30 pass allows a recipient unlimited rides on the transit system. Students must take their most recent report card for proof of enrollment to the River Cities Travel Center at 310 Capitol Ave. to purchase their passes.
