Clinton School sets events for week

The University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service in Little Rock is hosting four reading- and book-related events this week and another online program.

On Wednesday, a special foreign correspondent from PBS NewsHour will conduct a Facebook Live chat about North Korea.

Nick Schifrin is in a visiting fellowship with the school.

The school's director of public programs, Nikolai DiPippa, will host a question and answer session with Schifrin on the school's Facebook page at noon.

At 6 p.m. Wednesday at Sturgis Hall, The Reading Makeover event will begin. Danny Brassell, an associate professor of teacher education at California State University, Dominguez Hills will be the featured speaker.

"Using humor, music and games in his highly acclaimed presentations, Danny has motivated teachers around the country to create their own reading programs that nurture lifelong reading," according to a news release from the Clinton School.

There will be two events Thursday at Sturgis Hall. The first is a conversation with author and youth writing coach Jonathan Friesen at noon. His talk is titled "Mental Health in the Spotlight: Our Chance to be Human."

At 6 p.m. Thursday, author Jewell Parker Rhodes will speak about writing for youths and fostering empathy, diversity and social justice. She has won the American Book Award, the National Endowment of the Arts Award in fiction, and others.

On Friday, author Brad Herzog will talk about how a writer catches creative ideas. The event will be held at noon at Sturgis Hall. His work includes children's books, a trilogy of American travel memoirs and other fiction and nonfiction.
