A North Little Rock driver accused of drinking led an officer on a chase Saturday until he eventually surrendered and his vehicle caught fire, police said.

Around 4:30 p.m., a North Little Rock police officer watched a vehicle drive away from the Shorter College Gardens apartment complex at 800 N. Beech St., according to a police report.

The driver, later identified as 28-year-old Deron Monts, wasn't wearing a seat belt, and his windshield was cracked, police said.

The officer tried to pull the vehicle over but Monts continued west on Sa Jones Drive. Police pursued him to the east end of Little Rock where the 28-year-old reportedly drove his vehicle over a tire shredder, deflating the left-side tires.

Police said Monts then drove back to North Little Rock and surrendered at the intersection of Sa Jones Drive and Walnut Street. His vehicle caught fire, police said.

The cause of the fire was not stated on the report.

Monts smelled of intoxicants, slurred his speech and was unsteady on his feet, police said.

He faces charges that include driving while intoxicated and reckless driving, among other traffic offenses.
