Arkansas woman dies in custody after scuffle with sheriff's deputies, police say

A 36-year-old Hot Springs woman died early Sunday after a scuffle with Conway County sheriff's office deputies, according to Arkansas State Police.

Deputies responded to a disturbance call outside a residence on Oliger Drive near the Springfield community north of Plumerville where they encountered Regina Twist, according to a state police news release.

The encounter became an altercation, and deputies used a chemical agent and a Taser to try to gain control of Twist, the release said.

Deputies handcuffed the woman, and she became unresponsive. Twist was transported to a Morrilton hospital, where she later died, state police said.

The sheriff's office asked state police to investigate the in-custody death, which occurred some time after 4 a.m. The agency's Criminal Investigation Division will collect evidence and witness statements.

Twist's body was transported to the state Crime Laboratory for an autopsy.

Identities of the deputies and their statuses were not immediately available.
