Index up as retailer has busy trading day

The Arkansas Index, a price-weighted index that tracks the largest public companies based in the state, climbed 3.70 to 371.47 Tuesday.

"The major averages increased modestly as investors await several key economic updates and earnings releases later this week," said Bob Williams, senior vice president and managing director of Simmons First Investment Group Inc. in Little Rock.

Total volume for the index was 38.5 million shares, bolstered by the trading of 25 million Wal-Mart shares.

The index was developed by Bloomberg News and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette with a base value of 100 as of Dec. 30, 1997.
