Bielema buyout under $15M; UA owes $5.9M if he’s fired at season’s end, per contract

Photographs by Benjamin Krain

Arkansas Coach Bret Bielema’s buyout for his contract is not as expensive as had been originally reported, based on evaluation of the contract by legal counsel for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

Fifth-year Arkansas Razorbacks football Coach Bret Bielema has a substantial buyout written into his contract, but it is not as high as reported.

We could almost pay off the National Debt if ALL collegiate football coaches surrendered their annual salaries! Add to that number all the whiny, crybaby, kneeling NFL players payments and we'd be permanently out of debt! Such a waste of money - all of it!

Wonder what Bobby Petrino is thinking about now.

It may be a waste of money, but it is 100% free market capitalism. These coaches are paid what the market will afford. Remember, not one penny of tax payer money or student fees goes to athletics at U of A. They are self-sustaining.

Notice the buyout will be offset by ANY work Bielema gets, whether as an ESPN analyst (if that's still available) or a hog farmer back in southern Illinois. Jeff Long probably won't do it right now (we've had too many bad out-of-season firings, especially Jack Crowe & Bobby Petrino), but it'll be easy for him to get rid of Bielema if he so chooses. Of course I'd rather see him beat the you-know-what out of the Tide, but that would be a miracle; Nick Saban is the best coach in college football right now.

@TravisBickle: If the contracts work the way they have on The Hill, Long's buyout is probably similar to Bielema's. However, you can't measure Long's performance as AD by the records of his head football (or even basketball) coaches; even Frank Broyles wasn't measured that way as AD in spite of his continuous interference in the football program.

Bet all of these jokers' buyout still higher than Harvey Weinstein's.

Great opportunity for the Hogs. Take the difference between the $15 million we all believed was the buyout and what it really is and try to buy some players. Other schools have done it, so join the club. A Heisman QB goes for $175,000 or so, a suspected rapist a lot less.... Of course, I'm not really serious in asking Arkansas to cheat like so many other schools have and continue to do. .......just making a point that it takes quality players more so than high priced coaches to win in the SEC. A combination of both would be great, but that hasn't happened at Arkansas in years; and te prospects of it EVER happening are slim and none.

That should turn up the heat a bit. Time for Bielema to produce a miracle and beat Alabama or Auburn. Lol

Long hired Bulimia so he's just as complicit in this ongoing fiasco as Bulimia is. Look at what Nebraska did recently. The AD can be on the hot seat too.

Coach B should hook up with Houston Dale and find out how he went about quitting to take a new job with the Landsharks AND got a buyout from the U of A.
