6 fire chief candidates hail from outside Little Rock

Six out-of-town candidates will be interviewed for the Little Rock fire chief position.

City Manager Bruce Moore announced Tuesday that he has selected semifinalists from Tennessee, Texas and Arkansas to interview for the job. No local or internal candidates were chosen.

The semifinalists are:

• Mark Boyd, a retired division fire chief from Memphis.

• Brian Dunn, the San Angelo, Texas, fire chief.

• Manuel Fonseca, a retired assistant fire chief with the Nashville, Tenn., Fire Department.

• Delphone Hubbard, a current division fire chief with Memphis Fire Services.

• Kenneth Johnson, the assistant fire chief at the Missouri City, Texas, Fire Department.

• Ernest Jones, the assistant fire chief in Pine Bluff.

Moore will begin interviews this week. From the group, he will select finalists who will participate in public receptions sometime next month. Moore expects to announce his top picks by the end of this month, he said.

Current Fire Chief Gregory Summers is retiring after eight years at the helm. He's worked for the city for 34 years. He makes $133,980.

The posting for a new fire chief listed the annual salary at between $91,721 to $141,250.

Moore said he expects to hire someone in November and for Summers to stay on during a transitional period.
