A woman died and an officer was hospitalized after a fire at a North Little Rock apartment complex Saturday morning, police said.

Sgt. Brian Dedrick said it happened at Eastgate Terrace on East 19th Street.

Before arriving at the scene, officers were told there may have been a person in a wheelchair inside the apartment. The door to the apartment was locked, Dedrick said, and officers could not open it until North Little Rock firefighters arrived.

After the apartment was opened, a woman inside was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Dedrick did not know the cause of death, and he said Saturday that the woman's name was not being released yet.

An officer who inhaled smoke also was taken to a hospital, but his condition was not thought to be life-threatening.

As of Saturday, the cause of the fire was not known.
