Police investigating after 2 veterans' grave plaques sold to Arkansas recycling center

Police are investigating possible leads on how two grave plaques sold to at an Arkansas recycling center ended up at the location.

The Sentinel-Record in Hot Springs reported that the Hot Springs Police Department received a report Sept. 15 from employees at the unnamed recycling operation.

The workers said two plaques belonging to U.S. Army veterans Gary L. Garrett and Winiford F. Thompson were sold to their business.

“At this point, we don’t know if we have a crime or not,” Officer 1st Class Joey Williams told the newspaper, noting that detectives are following up on several leads in the case.

The plaques are believed to be from cemeteries in Garland County, Williams said.

If a crime is determined to have happened, the person responsible could face a charge of destruction or removal of a cemetery marker or grave marker, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years.
