Events scheduled by library system

Banned Books week begins today

The Central Arkansas Library System has several events lined up this week for Banned Books week.

A session today for teens and adults called Fighting a Surveillance Society will start at 6 p.m. at the Main Library at 100 Rock Street in downtown Little Rock.

The play Little Brother, based on the novel b7 Cory Doctorow, will be featured in the session. The play premieres at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Weekend Theater followed by a discussion with the cast and directors. Ticket prices are listed online at weekendtheater.org.

On Tuesday, Banned Books Week Trivia for ages 12-19 will take place at 4:30 p.m. at Dee Brown Library, 6325 Baseline Road.

Then at 6 p.m. Tuesday, attorney John Burnett and former library system Associate Director Bettye Kerns will host a Know Your First Amendment event at Fletcher Library, 823 N. Buchanan St.

Terry Library, 2015 Napa Valley Drive, will host a Harry Potter craft session at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, where youths ages 12-19 can make wands, Marauders’ Maps and origami Sorting Hats.

Community Giving Day is also Wednesday. A portion of the proceeds from any purchase at Whole Foods on Bowman Road from 7:30 a.m.to 10 p.m. will be donated to the library system’s Arkansas Literary Festival.

On Thursday, Banned Book Cover Bingo for ages 12-19 will be played at Rooker Library, 11 Otter Creek Court, at 4 p.m.

A Romance vs. Erotica writing workshop is planned at the Main Library at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Jobe and Kassandra Klay will lead the discussion.

At 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Rosalia Monroe of Cafe Bossa Nova and Rosalia’s Family Bakery will teach people how to make Champandongo, a dish featured in the book Like Water for Chocolate. Participants can register by emailing marylc@cals.org or calling (501) 821-3060.

The movie Like Water for Chocolate will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Ron Robinson Theater, 100 River Market Ave.

Earlier on Saturday, people can view entries for the library system’s Edible Book contest and taste chocolate from Northwest Arkansas chocolate maker KYYA. Chocolate also will be for sale, partly benefiting the Literary Festival. The event is from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Ron Robinson Theater. Winners of the Edible Book contest will be announced at the Like Water for Chocolate event.

Also Saturday, youths ages 12 and under can participate in Wizard Wannabees, a craft hour dedicated to popular characters in the Harry Potter book series at 3 p.m.

Earlier that day, at 10 a.m., people can watch Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban while partaking in Harry Potter-themed crafts and snacks at Hillary Rodham Clinton Children’s Library and Learning Center, 4800 W. 10th St.

At 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone will be shown at the Main Library.

To Kill a Mockingbird, 1 p.m. Wednesday at Milam Library, 609 Aplin Ave. in Perryville.

James and the Giant Peach, 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Fletcher Library, 823 N. Buchanan St. in Little Rock.

Goosebumps, 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Sanders Library, 31 Shelby Ave. in Sherwood.
