JOHN BRUMMETT: Elizabeth endures

Photographs by Democrat Gazette file photo/WILL COUNTS

Hazel Bryan shouts insults at Elizabeth Eckford as she walks past a line of National Guardsman.

Elizabeth Eckford spoke softly, tersely, and with understated power.

These were the voices from 60 years ago, but these are still the voices in Charlottesville or Harrison or even in these boards. When people degrade a class of people because of their race, either directly or indirectly, those voices carry forward to today.
"If Democrats want a high crime rate and more Democratic voters you got to get rid of whites and replace them with Blacks."
Thank you for sharing the moments from that night, John. We need more diversity of thought like this to help remind us that while we've come a long ways, we still have a long ways to go.

mozarky, democrats then in the south are today's republicans. They started switching parties en mass with the civil rights movement of the 60's and finished the switch when the U.S. elected a black man as POTUS. Faubus would be your GOP god if he were alive in office today. Study history, and don't make this about politics. This was about a young black girl standing up to a bunch of racists, many of whom still live in this state and espouse their views on this web site.

You're either lying or misinformed, hah.
Today's democrat party is even more pernicious in their treatment of blacks. The democrats purposely keep them as poor and stupid as possible, solely for their votes. A growing number of blacks are figuring this out, and before long they'll stop being such a reliable bloc for the dems. And when that happens, the dem party dies. Probably around November.
No, hah, the democrats of 1957 stayed democrats.

Moz I know you’re issue illiterate, but you really proved your ignorance today. Dixiecrats, the racist Democrats of the 50s and 60s, were pushed out of the Democratic Party and moved to the Republican Party. Storm Thurmond was a great example. You are a part of that ignorant bunch who continues to hold this country back from true greatness.

RBear says...

I read moz’s comment and I really have to ask if people are REALLY that issue illiterate. To even suggest that with a straight face shows moz has not studied the path of the Dixiecrats and how they migrated to the Republican Party. I would hope he would be as ashamed of them, but he probably would have been one of them, embracing their racist ideology. If not, then he should be leading the movement to eradicate them from the Republican Party where they fled to.

The dimocrat party has done everything in their power to keep black people down, solely for their votes. Black people are beginning to figure it out, though.
The dims have already manifested their hatred of the working class loud and clear, and that fact gave us President Trump. Now, blacks are figuring out that the dims hate them, too.
That "Blue Wave" you people are predicting in November will be a Red Tsunami.
Buh-bye, dimocrat party!

Elizabeth Eckford has been awarded numerous accolades for her courage and heroism, including the NAACP’s Spingarn Medal and the U.S.’s Congressional Gold Medal, which is the country’s highest civilian award. A Strong and Courageous Lady.

"It wasn’t until 1964 that African-American support for the GOP fell off the cliff. Barry Goldwater’s vote against the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which, ironically, was supported by larger proportions of Republicans than Democrats in both houses of Congress drove black voter supporter for the GOP standard-bearer down below ten percent. In the years since, it has rarely climbed much above that mark and has never come close to the level Richard Nixon received in 1960."
"When Richard Nixon took office in 1969, 68 percent of black Southern students attended segregated schools. Within five years, that number had been cut to 9 percent. As Tom Wicker wrote in his biography, One of Us, The Nixon administration did more in 1970 to desegregate Southern school systems than had been done in the sixteen previous years, or probably since.”
"The lock the Democrats had on Southern Senate and House seats also began to erode during the Nixon years.
The reasons for this change are many. Chief among them is Richard Nixon success in occupying the middle ground in American politics and thus attracting the support of Silent Majority, not just in the South, but also in every part of America."

It makes no difference their financial, physical, or mental capabilities. Rightside, your error is in the fact that LBJ signed the voter rights act, and equal rights amendment. At that time he stated that the Democrats had lost the South. After that all the old Dixiecrats left the party and became Republicans, and they are still Republicans today! I was a Republican, born and raised in the south, but my family had no slaves and didn't believe in owning people. When the Dixiecrats moved into my political party I moved out as they brought with them the same hate as they had before, and as far as I can see they still have it.

moz how pathetic you are to even comment on sports. Sooooo ... a little on this story which apparently you know NOTHING about. Rippon was asked about Pence by reporters and responded that he wouldn't meet with Pence while on the trip, partly because of Pence's past history regarding conversion therapy, but more importantly because he was concentrating on his performance with Team USA.
Rippon posted a flawless performance that had no mistakes during it, but wasn't as technically challenging at the end as some of the other competitors. In figure skating, jumps executed towards the end of the performance score higher than at the beginning. Other team members had mistakes in their performance that dragged the scores down, namely Nathan Chen who had mistakes in his performance at the start. A bronze was a great showing by Team USA which wasn't really expected to medal.
The fact you would attack Rippon in that way shows how freaking ignorant you are of the sport. Sorry, but you showed how much of an ignorant troll you are just then. Regarding Olympians and the White House, you are probably going to find several who are going to ditch the trip this year because of the current inhabitant.

RBear says...

moz let's just show how STUPID your comment was on Rippon's performance. Looking at the cumulative results of the Team event, Rippon scored the second highest score of any of the US scores, scoring an 8 in the singles skating. Not that you should be attacking any one of the athletes, but we scored a 6 in ladies and a couple of 7s in pair skating. So, as you can see it wasn't Rippon that dragged the team down. Regardless, with Canada scoring 3 10s and the OAR scoring 3 10s there was no way the US could have gotten any higher.
As I stated, Rippon chose to NOT make it about Pence during the competition and focus on the competition. Pence wanted to meet with him in PyeongChang, trying to score a photo op, disregarding the athlete's need to concentrate. If anyone was trying to create the distraction, it was Pence.

He also outed himself as a petulant little twit by refusing to meet with Pence. You are to be commended for playing nice with gohogs. Rippon should be condemned for not playing nice with Pence.
As to why Rippon finished third it's because two other people finished ahead of him. Kind of how Trump finished ahead of Hillary.
