Steamboats to freedom

Charles Bolton, former history professor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, discusses the role that steamboats played in the transporting of slaves to the Northern states and secret groups that helped them to escape north to freedom in a lecture titled "Steamboats of the Slave Era," 6 p.m. today, Beth El Heritage Hall, 405 Perry St., Helena-West Helena. 'Magic of the Piano'

Pianist Scott Carrell, a faculty member at Harding University in Searcy, will give a recital, 3 p.m. Sunday at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 199 Barcelona Road, Hot Springs Village. The performance is under the auspices of the Hot Springs/Hot Springs Village Symphony Guild.

On Carrell's program, titled "The Magic of the Piano," will be the Piano Sonata No. 38 in F major, Hob. XVI: 23, by Franz Joseph Haydn; "Nocturne" from Felix Mendelssohn's incidental music for A Midsummer Night's Dream (arranged by Moritz Moszkowski; two preludes -- No. 6 in G-flat major and No. 7 in a minor -- by Noel Gallon; Ballade No. 3 in A-flat major, op.47, by Frederic Chopin; Elite Syncopations by Scott Joplin; 12th Street Rag by Euday Bowman; "Ain't Misbehavin'" by Thomas Wright "Fats" Waller; and Toccata by Pierre Sancan.

Conway bridal show

More than 50 vendors, including florists, caterers and representatives of entertainment companies and venues, will showcase everything you need to get married at the ninth RVO Conway Bridal Show, 1-5 p.m. Sunday at the Conway Expo Center, 2505 E. Oak St., Conway. The show will include a runway fashion show; Pat's Kitchen will set up a Bridal Cafe.

The biggest of several door prizes will be an Ultimate Wedding Package, valued at more than $7,000, including photography, wedding venue, flowers, dental services, lingerie shower and boudoir session; random drawing will take place 5 p.m. Brides-to-be will receive a free 2018 Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Bridal Planner.
