House Speaker Jeremy Gillam, R-Judsonia, with the support of some of his predecessors, put forward a memorial resolution Thursday to honor late Parliamentarian Tim Massanelli.

Massanelli, 85, died Monday. He retired in 2011 after spending nearly 40 years advising members on House procedure and rules.

According to House Memorial Resolution 1001, Massanelli worked with more than 1,000 legislators, seven governors and 19 speakers.

Nine of those former speakers -- John Lipton, B.G. Hendrix, Shane Broadway, Robert Moore, Robbie Wills, Lloyd McCuiston, Bill Stovall, Bob Johnson and Herschel Cleveland -- appeared in the House chamber Thursday. One by one, they rose to the lectern to share stories of the parliamentarian, whom they described as a mentor and confidant.

House members then gave a standing ovation as they unanimously voted to back the resolution.
