The Arkansas Arts Center renovation will dig out the original 1937 building and make it the entryway to a redone museum that includes more gallery space and an open walkway that better connects the arts school, children’s theater and hanging artwork, architects said Tuesday.

Jeanne Gang, the lead architect, and Kate Orff, the landscape architect, gave a joint presentation to the museum’s board of trustees to kick off a series of presentations throughout the day that will culminate with a public presentation at 6:30 p.m.

Construction is estimated to cost $70 million, up from an original estimate of $46 million, board president Merritt Dyke said after the presentation. That sum does not include costs like architectural fees or the expansion of the museum’s endowment that officials say is needed to support the renovation.
