A 37-year-old Arkansas woman was arrested on a charge of first-degree domestic battery after her step-granddaughter suffered burns to more than 40 percent of her body, authorities said.

Angela Engeron of Paragould remained in the Greene County jail on Thursday with bail set at $1 million. She was arrested on Monday.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed in the case, the Arkansas Child Abuse Hotline received a report that a girl under the age of 5 was staying with her step-grandmother when she suffered the burns.

A doctor who examined the girl told authorities the "history given is inconsistent with the injuries and the pattern of the burn is consistent with an immersion burn and non-accidental trauma," police wrote.

The affidavit didn't note what story was provided about how the injuries were sustained. But it noted that the burns "would not have been caused by the patient."
