Arkansas men start season with victory

The University of Arkansas, Faytteville men's team started its season Friday with a 5-2 victory at Tulsa.

Brothers Jose and Pedro Alonso got things started in doubles, defeating Tulsa's Lucca Baptista and Mitchell Pritchard 6-1. Arkansas' Josh Howard-Tripp and Jose Salazar fought back from a 3-2 deficit to defeat Tulsa's Louis Corker and Joshua Goodger 6-4.

Jose Alonso, Oscar Mesquida, Salazar and Howard-Tripp also picked up singles victories for the Razorbacks. Pedro Alonso lost to Baptista, while Adam Sanjurjo lost to Goodger.

The Razorbacks travel to Norman, Okla., on Sunday to take on No. 18 Oklahoma.

BOWLING

ASU third after first day

The third-ranked Arkansas State University women's team finished 3-2 Friday and is in third place after the first day of competition at the Mid-Winter Invitational in Jonesboro.

Arkansas State opened the day with consecutive victories over Grambling State and No. 4 Vanderbilt, then took consecutive losses to No. 1 Nebraska and Jackson State. The Red Wolves defeated Valparaiso in their final match.

ASU finished with 4,976 total pins to finish in third place behind No. 5 Sam Houston State (5,111 pins) and Nebraska (5,053 pins). Vanderbilt finished the day fourth with 4,962 pins, and No. 7 Stephen F. Austin was fifth with 4,939.

The Red Wolves begin the second day of competition today against No. 23 Lincoln Memorial in the first of five traditional matches.
