Becky Pittman

Where I live: Kingwood

Occupation: I'm a small-business owner. I own a marketing and public relations firm called Pittman Strategies that helps small businesses and nonprofits raise their profile and reach their target audiences.

My favorite space is: my little back deck.

Why? Our backyard is a valley and our deck high above it provides the perfect vantage point for nature watching and relaxing. It's a little like a treehouse that happens to be just off of our living room. As a native Arkansan, I'm grateful to live in a place where even in the state's biggest city, I can find a way to connect with nature on a regular basis. Whether it's watching squirrels, birds and deer, or simply enjoying the trees, it's the perfect escape for work and relaxation.

While "they" say one shouldn't mix a rest space and work space, our deck is absolutely one of my favorite places to work. It's a quiet, comfortable retreat where I do my most creative thinking. I'll disconnect from the digital world, grab a notebook and pen, and head out there to write and plan. And when work is over, I'll relax on the daybed with my kids or husband and read whatever book I'm working through.

If I could make one change to improve this space, I would: We're planning to expand our deck in the future to make room for our growing kids and friends who often join us there.
