• Anthony Mannino, a police sergeant in Naperville, Ill., received an award for his quick actions in rescuing a young boy from a busy roadway by using his patrol car to block a lane of traffic after seeing the child wandering along Route 59, then running to the boy and scooping him up, telling him, "You're OK."
• Dai'ryon Mitchell, 21, of Ohio was literally caught by police after he fled from a traffic stop, ran into a home and, while later hanging by his hands from a window ledge, tried to pull himself back inside but lost his grip, falling into the arms of officers below, police said.
• Richard Moseley Sr., 73, of Kansas City, Mo., was sentenced to 10 years in prison after running a $220 million payday lending operation that cheated more than 620,000 people nationwide by charging interest rates that sometimes reached 700 percent or more using deceptive practices.
• Shannon Lugdon said her dog, Leo, quickly became friends with an abandoned baby moose that began following them around "begging for attention," before a biologist moved the moose to the Maine Wildlife Park.
• Candi Ayers, 45, was sentenced to five years of probation after stealing $2,170 in probation fees from 14 clients while she was working for a Cape Girardeau, Mo., private company that supervises low-level offenders.
• James Campbell, a former Atlanta sheriff's deputy, was fired and charged with stalking after three women accused him of harassment, with one telling authorities that he went to her home even though she texted him to not contact her.
• Thomas Ward, 71, was sentenced to 90 days in jail after witnesses told authorities that they saw him drive off, dragging his pit bull that was tied to his truck's hitch, and they followed him to his Pensacola, Fla., home, where he took the dog's lifeless body to a shed.
• Gail Oakes, 36, was charged with manslaughter and corpse abuse after investigators in Alabama found the remains of her 6-month-old son, Curtis James Oakes, in a freezer in a hotel room.
