BENTONVILLE -- It was a sprint to the finish line that determined the winner of the girls 1,600-meter run Friday night.

Bentonville High junior Lainey Quandt outkicked Fayetteville's Rebecca Boushelle over the final 100 meters to take first place in the event during the Tiger Relays at the Tiger Athletic Complex. Quandt had a time of 5 minutes, 14.48 seconds, while Boushelle, the lone Fayetteville competitor in Friday's meet, finished in a season-best 5:15.12.

"I just had to stay relaxed the whole time," Quandt said. "I was going to take off at the 300 mark, but she went at the 300. So we were both working hard at the end, but I knew when we reached the 100 mark it was time to go."

Quandt remained within reach of Boushelle for the entire race. Boushelle then tried to put some distance between the two runners with 200 meters to go before they reached the final curve.

That's when Quandt made her move, despite both runners having to run into a stiff wind. Quandt used lengthy strides to take the lead with about 60 meters to go and went on to win the race.

"That was pretty much my plan heading into the last lap," said Quandt, who also won the 800 in 2:21.53 and ran the final leg of Bentonville's 4x400 relay. "I felt much more winded after the end of the race than normal, but it was good."

The Tiger Relays, back after a one-year hiatus, mainly became a showdown between Bentonville and Springdale Har-Ber in the final meet before schools go on spring break next week. Bentonville's girls dominated their portion of the meet as the Lady Tigers accumulated 333.67 points to 132.33 for second-place Har-Ber.

The boys were a much closer detail and more strategic, mainly because both teams also had athletes who competed the Lion Invitational held Thursday at Gravette. Bentonville, which had some of its athletes compete in both meets, won 11 of 17 events and accumulated 267.5 points while Har-Ber had 220 points.

"We have a big team, and we wanted to give everybody a chance to compete," Bentonville coach Mike Power said. "We look at our home meet as a chance for everybody to put a score on the board, and this was a great opportunity for that.

"It was a fun meet, and we enjoyed it. Now we can go into the spring break and have an easy week, then come back and start working toward a championship."
