What records is Avengers: Infinity War not going to break?

The Disney/Marvel film continued to vaporize its competition in its second week, becoming the fastest film ever to cross $1 billion globally. Domestically, the film took in about $115 million -- the second biggest second weekend ever, behind Star Wars: Episode VII -- The Force Awakens -- and has now made about $453 million in the United States and Canada.

The film cruised past the cumulative total of many of the wildly successful predecessors in the Marvel cinematic universe, including Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Records are being set around the world, including for the biggest opening day ever in Russia. And the movie has still not touched down in China, where it is expected to draw a mammoth audience.

The film's continued success reinforces the dominance of Disney and Marvel studios in Hollywood. Disney just crossed $3 billion for 2018, breaking its own record for the shortest time to reach that landmark in a given year. And Marvel has another potential blockbuster, Deadpool 2, arriving May 18.

Marvel's other entry, Black Panther, has maintained its place in the top 10 for 12 consecutive weeks. The film added about $3.2 million over the weekend in domestic earnings for about $693 million.

In second place -- and trailing by $98 million -- was Overboard, a gender-swapped remake of the 1987 romantic comedy with the same title. The film stars Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez as unlikely lovers, and was produced by MGM and Pantelion Films, a Lionsgate-backed production company aimed at Hispanic audiences. (The film will open in Mexico this week, where Derbez is a huge star.)

While the film received poor reviews, it also earned an A- CinemaScore, which often bodes well for word-of-mouth ticket sales. It debuted in second place with $14.7 million.

Paramount's A Quiet Place, directed by and starring John Krasinski, performed well in its fifth weekend. It added about $7.8 million for about $160 million and third-place finish.

At No.4, STX Entertainment's I Feel Pretty starring Amy Schumer, now in its third weekend, added $5 million in earnings for about $38 million.

Rounding out the top five, Warner Bros.' Rampage added $4.6 million in its fourth weekend, for about $85 million.

In sixth place, Tully, starring Charlize Theron, launched on 1,353 screens with about $3.3 million. It's the third collaboration between director Jason Reitman and screenwriter Diablo Cody, the team behind Juno, and their second with Theron, who also starred in their film Young Adult.

The final new wide release of the week, Electric Entertainment's Bad Samaritan, earned $1.7 million and came in at No. 11.

Hollywood's summer movie season typically runs from the first weekend in May through Labor Day, but this year got a jump-start with the late April release of Infinity War.

"This was not the strongest weekend ever in terms of the official kick-off of the summer season, but we could be looking at a record May ultimately," Dergarabedian said, noting forthcoming releases including Deadpool 2 (May 18) and Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25). "This weekend just shows how the strategy of release dates is changing how the box office plays out."
