Where I live: Mabelvale

Occupation: retired from University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences

My favorite space is: My porch and yard

Why?: I have such enjoyable mornings, afternoons and evenings watching birds and deer and other wildlife from my porch. Our property is surrounded by different types of environments, neighborhoods on two sides, woods on one side, and a family development on the other. We are very fortunate to live in the middle of 20 acres that was passed down through my family. We live in a log cabin that we helped build in 1997-1998. As we planned to build a "livable" shop to stay in while the cabin was built, the March 1997 tornado destroyed the shop, the camper we stayed in, all vehicles and most of the trees. We were very fortunate to make it out -- a logging ditch was our refuge during that storm. It took several years for the property re-energize itself. After the storm there were no birds, no critters, no snakes. The first five to seven years were basically recovering and watching our land and wildlife recover. Twenty years later we are so glad to see trees and even those "pesky squirrels" return. My favorite is sitting on the porch and watching all the different birds. Even though we are close to Little Rock city limits we are lucky to be able to enjoy the outdoors with our dogs and cat and each other.

If I could make one change to improve this space, I would: Nothing, it's wonderful.
