Police: Central Arkansas officer fatally shoots assailant with knife

A Jacksonville Police Department officer fatally shot a person with a knife who had placed the weapon to another person's throat and refused orders to drop it, authorities said.

The officer, whose name wasn't released, was placed on leave pending an investigation into the shooting, which happened after 10:30 p.m. Saturday in the 1400 block of Stanphil Road.

Police say officers arrived to find one victim who had been stabbed and a person with a knife standing over a second person, who was on the ground. The weapon was reportedly placed at the person's throat.

"Officers demanded the armed assailant to put down the knife, the assailant refused to do so," police wrote in a news release, noting the officer fired twice.

The person with the knife, whose name also hasn't been released, died at the scene after being hit in the shoulder and the back, the release noted.

The stabbing victim was taken to the hospital. There was no word on that person's condition.

The shooting remains under investigation, authorities said.
