"The Arkansas Blues: Photographs by Cheryl Cohen and Louis Guida" opens with a 5:30-7:30 p.m. reception today in the Galleries at Library Square (formerly the Butler Center Galleries), 401 President Clinton Ave. The exhibit consists of black-and-white photographs by Cohen and Guida, on loan from the Arkansas Arts Center, documenting blues musicians playing in Arkansas during the 1970s. Jazz in the Park

Dizzy 7 performs for Jazz in the Park, 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the History Pavilion, just west of the First Security Amphitheater in Little Rock's Riverfront Park, 400 President Clinton Ave., Little Rock. (The closest entry point is on Ottenheimer Drive off President Clinton Avenue.)

No coolers are allowed; beer, wine, soft drinks and water will be for sale, along with Jazz in the Park koozies, and a portion of the proceeds benefit Art Porter Music Education Inc.'s scholarship fund. Lawn chairs and blankets are welcome, and there is some seating in the natural stone amphitheater at the History Pavilion.

Sponsors are the Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau and the River Market, in partnership with Art Porter Music Education Inc. Admission is free. In case of rain, the performances will be in the River Market Ottenheimer Market Hall West Pavilion.

Lunchtime armistice

Mike Polston, the staff historian of the Encyclopedia of Arkansas of History and Culture, will examine the events across the state upon the Nov. 11, 1918, signing of the World War I armistice in a Brown Bag Lunch Lecture titled "It's Over: Arkansas Celebrates the End of the Great War," noon-1 p.m. Thursday at the Old State House Museum, 300 W. Writing contest

Thursday is the deadline to submit entries for the Arkansas Literary Festival's Banned Books Week writing contest. Entries must be 50-750 words and should either be in the form of a stand-alone short story or styled as a missing chapter of Bret Easton Ellis' 1991 best-seller American Psycho, the inspiration for this year's competition. There will be a $300 grand prize and a $100 honorable mention; winning entries will be selected based on creativity, flow, style and originality. Email submissions to LitFest@cals.org. Winners will be announced before a 7 p.m Sept. 26 screening of the film American Psycho at the Ron Robinson Theater, Library Square, 100 River Market Ave., Little Rock. This year's focus is on banned or challenged books that were made into films. Arts Council fellows

The Arkansas Arts Council has named nine Arkansas writers, composers and artists as Individual Artist Fellows, each to receive $4,000 in recognition of "individual artistic ability and creative excellence." The recipients:

• For Literary Arts: Playwriting -- Candrice Jones of Little Rock and Rachel Lynett and John Walch of Fayetteville

• For Performing Arts: Music Composition in the Classical Western Tradition -- Aaron J. Fisher of Jonesboro, David Franks of Greenland and Jake Hertzog of Fayetteville

• For Visual Arts: Works on Paper -- Melissa Cowper-Smith of Morrilton, Lisa Krannichfeld of Little Rock and Sabine Schmidt of Fayetteville.

The Arts Council will hand out the awards at a ceremony, 5:30-8:30 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Historic Arkansas Museum, 200 E. Third St., Little Rock. Light refreshments and beverages will be served.
