Mary Goodman Amerine Stephens

Mary Goodman Amerine Stephens died at her home on Monday, October 18, 2010. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia on July 31, 1926 to Mr. and Mrs. Warren Miles Amerine. Mrs. Stephens was raised in Atlanta and graduated from Ward-Belmont College in Nashville, Tennessee. She later graduated from Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, Georgia at age nineteen. She married Jackson Thomas Stephens on November 28, 1948, and they made their home in Little Rock, Arkansas. They had two children, Jackson Thomas Stephens Jr. and Warren Amerine Stephens. Mrs. Stephens moved to Montgomery, Alabama, her father's birthplace, in 1971. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and the Sojourners' Club. Mrs. Stephens loved her family and her home, and had numerous friends in both Little Rock and Montgomery. She was bright, capable and fiercely independent. She is survived by her sons, Jackson Thomas Stephens Jr. and Warren Amerine Stephens and his wife Harriet Calhoun Stephens and six grandchildren: Caroline Amerine Stephens and her husband Frank Bruce Stephens, Jackson Thomas Stephens III, Nicholas Mason Stephens, Warren Miles Amerine Stephens, John Calhoun Stephens and Laura Whitaker Stephens. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Sydney Amerine Stephens and Frank Bruce Stephens Jr. There will be a graveside service on Friday, October 22 at 3 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery with a reception following at St. John's Episcopal Church, Montgomery, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. John's Episcopal Church, 113 Madison Avenue, Montgomery, Alabama or Episcopal Collegiate School, 1701 Cantrell Road, Little Rock, Arkansas.
