Marguerite Wells Lavender

Marguerite Wells Lavender, 95, of Little Rock died Sunday, October 24, 2010. She was born in Memphis, Tennessee on June 3, 1915 to James N. Wells, Sr. and Laura Olive Davis Wells. The family moved to Black Rock, Arkansas, where Marguerite attended school and graduated as co-valedictorian of her senior class. She attended Arkansas State University at Jonesboro and then moved to Little Rock to attend business college. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church for over 70 years and taught Sunday School classes, served on committees, and was Director of Sunday School Departments. She was the first President of the Federation of Night Baptist Business Women of Pulaski County. She was a long-time member of the Musical Coterie, Little Rock, the Women's City Club, and a former member of the Leawood Garden Club. During the war, she served as secretary to the Regional Director of Defense Transportation in Chicago and later Secretary to the President of NACO Fertilizer Company in Wilmington, North Carolina where Mr. Lavender was stationed for a while. She retired as Office Manager and Comptroller of the law firm of Friday, Eldredge & Clark after 32 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard Lavender; a brother, John Wells; and a sister, Vivian Smith. Survivors include a brother, Dr. James Wells and his wife, Marilea of Columbia, Missouri; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Young and her husband Joncie of Texarkana; and several wonderful nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m., Friday, October 29, 2010 at Immanuael Baptist Church followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. in the church chapel.
