Walter Sherman Speight

Walter "Sherman" Speight departed this life on May 4, 2011 at the age of 91. He was born on his family's farm in Hickory Plains, Arkansas on January 24, 1920 to David and Grace Speight. He was a 1939 graduate from Des Arc High School. He started out farming with his father and later became a pipe fitter that led him to travel the country. He retired from Safeway and resided on his family farm his last years. Sherman had a passion working the land he was born on. He loved being on the tractor or behind a chainsaw. He was the happiest when he was with his family at what lovingly became known as "the farm". He was a member of the Hickory Plains United Methodist Church. He leaves behind a host of friends and family. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Louise Hartsell Speight; one daughter, Gail Jones and husband Jimmy Jones of Mayodan, N.C.; one son, Stan Speight and wife Shelly Speight of Wickes, Ark.; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Graveside funeral services will be 2 p.m., Saturday, May 7 at the Hickory Plains Cemetery. The family has requested in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Hickory Plains Cemetery fund or the Hickory Plains United Methodist Church.
