Ida Mae Cannon Still

Ida Mae Cannon Still, died May 5th, 2011. She was born July 20, 1909 in Hope, Arkansas to Archelaus and Sarah "Bertie" Schoolfield Cannon. She was married to the late Judge Ernest Still of Arkadelphia. She lived in Arkadelphia for many years, having first lived here while a student at Henderson-Brown College in 1928. She was a retired teacher of 31 years, mostly in the Arkadelphia School District. She was also Dean of Women at Southern Arkansas (then Magnolia A. & M.) during the mid 1930's. From 1944 until 1950, she was Deputy Clerk in the Clark County Clerk's Office. During her lifetime Ida Mae was an avid traveler and gardener. She was a past member of the Arkadelphia, Arkansas, Groves, Texas and Hemphill, Texas Garden Clubs where she earned ribbons for flower displays. She shared interests of needlework, quilting and cut glass which she collected with her daughter. Ida Mae was a member of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution since 1958; and also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and Arkansas Retired Teachers Association. She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Cannon Still Keyton and husband Richard of Arkadelphia, four grandchildren; Sarah "Sally" Dixon and husband Byron Dixon, of Social Hill, Arkansas; Robin Johnston and husband Stephen of Hemphill, Texas; Nancy Reed and husband Derral of Abilene, Texas; Jefferson Keyton and wife Sarah of Austin, Texas; and five great-grandchildren; PFC Jesse Dixon (USMC), Pensacola, Florida, J. Daniel "Danny" Iles, Beaumont, Texas, Christopher Iles, Nacogdoches, Texas, Margo Reed, Abilene, Texas, and Ivy Mae Keyton, Austin, Texas and niece Dorothy Coltharp of Midlothian, Texas and nephew, Dr. Allan Cannon, Austin, Texas. She was predeceased by her husband, Judge J. Ernest Still, her mother and father Sarah and Arch Cannon, and brother Gordon Cannon and sister Clarice Cannon of Hope, Arkansas. Graveside funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday in the Mt. Zion Cemetery with Dr. Phil W. McLarty officiating. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Home in Arkadelphia.
