Gene Newman, 83, of Hot Springs passed away May 20, 2011. She was born in Levy, Ark. on May 28, 1927 to the late Emmett Ewell Stanley and Esther Cumi Lary Stanley Gene was a full-time homemaker for much of her life, working briefly as a dental assistant after her daughter was in college. She was a life-long Methodist, teaching Sunday school and Bible school and baking goodies for countless church functions. She was a true Southern lady. She'll be remembered for her beautiful smile and sparkling eyes, her optimistic outlook on life and her love for all of God's creatures, great and small. Gene lived in Sherwood, Oppelo and Hot Springs. She was married to E.M. Newman for 66 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother; and two sisters, Dorothy Stanley Hamilton and Jeanette Stanley Briley. Gene is survived by her husband, E.M. Newman; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Ed Franklin; grandson, Greg Franklin and his fiancee, Marie Langhout; sister, Mary Lou Stanley Palmer and her husband Rudy Palmer; brother-in-law and wife Allen Joe Melba Newman; along with many nieces, nephews and their children. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Monday, May 23, 2011 at Rest Hills Funeral Home on Landers Road North Little Rock. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery.
