Walter L. Schrader

Walter L. Schrader, of Bryant, went to be with his Lord and Savior at the age of 87 on May 27, 2011, at the North Little Rock VA Hospital. He was born on September 18, 1923 in Fort Smith, Ark. Walter was a 100 percent disabled veteran, a resident of Saline County for 75 years and a 1941 graduate of Mabelvale High School. He was a lifelong Lutheran and a member of Zion Lutheran Church. Walter was an avid Bryant Hornet, Razorback, and Rook player fan. He also loved playing board and card games with family and friends. Walter served as a radio switchboard operator in Battery A 389th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion during the New Guinea Campaign. His decorations and citations include the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and two Purple Hearts. He was injured at the Southwest Pacific Theatre on July 4, 1944. He was preceded in death by his parents, Adolf and Elizabeth Hubmann; and his father, Walter Schrader, his brother, Adolf Hubmann and a sister, Catherine Schrader. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Irene B. (Helmich) Schrader of Bryant; one sister, Christine Wray and her husband, Royce of Lonsdale; seven children and their spouses, Becky and Glenn Hannah, Barbara and John Dunn, Bruce and Mary Schrader, Ron and Kathy Schrader, Regina and Bill Smith, all of Benton, Regan and Donna Schrader of Wilburn, and Roger and Donna Schrader of Bryant; eighteen grandchildren, Carla and David Robinson, Jennifer (Dunn) Rodgers, David, Alan, Thompson, and Scott Schrader, Brandy Schrader, Travis Smith, Heather (Smith) Hardin, Donovan, Burgandy, and Kassandra Schrader, Matt, Mandy, Maggie, Madison, and Maddie Grace Schrader; and fourteen great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held Sunday, May 29, 2011 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Roller-Ballard Funeral Home (315-4047) in Benton. A dinner will be served at 12:30 p.m. Monday, May 30, 2011 at Avilla Zion Lutheran Church prior to the service. Funeral services are scheduled at the church Monday, May 30, 2011 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Mike Schlieder officiating. Interment will follow at Avilla Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be his grandsons. The family would like to give a special thanks to all at Fort Roots VA Hospital, in North Little Rock, Ark., especially the staff of 3H and 1E, and a heartfelt thanks to Chaplain Redd.
